Claude from Anthropic develops protein binders for scorpion venom antidote
Anthropic used its Claude model to solve a complex biological problem: developing potential antidotes against scorpion neurotoxins. Scorpions sting millions of people every year, and the availability of effective antivenoms remains a challenge.
As part of the research, Anthropic collaborated with Citrini to ask Claude to generate proteins that would bind to scorpion toxins. Over 64 hours, the model created over 300,000 unique constructs, of which 211 were submitted for testing.
After laboratory testing, it was found that only 17 of these designs demonstrated the ability to bind to dangerous toxins secreted by scorpions from Mexico, North Africa, and the Middle East. This demonstrates how generative AI can significantly accelerate the initial stages of fundamental biomedical research.
It is important to note that this is only a research stage, and creating a full-fledged antidote will require many further tests in living systems. Nevertheless, Anthropic published all 211 tested designs and data in the open domain, which will be a valuable resource for the global scientific community. Thus, AI is becoming a powerful catalyst in the fight against global health threats.
